Season of Quietude

The quietude of the year's first month begs to be noticed. Nature appears to be resting on this rare January day. The sun pours out its warm gift without hindrance causing a soft sigh among nature’s elements.

The trees stand still as if napping without interruption from the could-be winds.

The tide sneaks in only noticeable by a prolonged focus on its slow and steady rise. As if something isn’t there - then it is.

Birds above, some flutter; some hang out in full wing span. They are not fooled by the fair day. Their sight is clear to any prey.

Squirrels dart and dash, plundering for every edible bit, taking advantage of no obstacles, and honing in on small birds' feed.

Clusters of hardened snow sunbathe on the upper shoreline with no mind to their potential demise in just a few hours.

The billowy clouds are transparent to the sun. It’s cloudy, but not the infamous dull grey of the season.

Shadows are long, slowly doing a 360° around the base of each tree.

The quiet is harmonious with nature’s images. The tide waters widen and lift themselves onto the shores.

A faded turquoise skiff laid vertically to the shore continues to age in the sun.

It’s a day of nourishment for the soul, a buffet of nature’s life that can only be experienced in its quietude.
